Conforming to Role Model Status

Growing up in a small town had its benefits. Everyone knows who you are, friends and family are real close. Life is good. But, with the community being so small you have to watch what you do and say because it gets around. Your everyday life is influenced by one group: your community. Your everyday decisions are affected by your community. I was forced to conform to the status quo. Any deviation from that would result in my being shunned for life.

Once I attained the high school athlete status, everything I did was watched. Every thing I said was heard. Every little girl looked up to me. Every decision I made was positively or negatively criticized. I was the community’s kid. I was everyone’s daughter. That’s just what happens when you attain the status of an glorified athlete in the small town of Syracuse, Indiana. The decisions I made were swayed by them. I had to do things the right way, as opposed to the way every other one of my classmates were acting. Underage drinking at a corn field party was not necessarily something that was encouraged by the community. Yet, my friends seemed to think that it was the thing to do. So, this evidence gives support to the idea of group conformity. I turned away from group conformity at my peers’ level and went towards the norm on my community’s. Even if acting like my peers was what I truly wanted to do. The community expected a maturity level out of me that wasn’t expected out of my peers.

Acting within what a certain group thinks is called conformity. As tempting as it was to conform I struggled and remained an individual on my choices. “The fact is that we live our lives in groups-the family, work groups, social, religious and political groups” (Lessing 357). Conformity is acting similar to the norm. According to Doris Lessing, the author of “Group Minds,” “The hardest thing in the world is to stand out against one’s group, a group of one’s peers” (Lessing 358). So, my going against my peers was nothing easy. The decisions I made to not go out to a party, and or some rampant toilet papering event, went against what my peers had wanted, however, my friendships did not suffer. My friends new I had to keep my nose as clean as possible. As far as conforming to my communities expectations goes, I did exactly what they wanted. I conformed to their ideas of the ideal athlete and the ideal person. My entire purpose in life during my four years in high school was to please everybody. From getting our team out of the slum of our conference my freshman year, to becoming a state contender my senior year. The goal was to make everyone happy… And to do that, I had to do what they wanted. Therefore, following their every instruction and every normality they had planned for me. The decision to come to Findlay is a good example. Everyone in my community had wanted me to go to a big division one school to play basketball. This was the one of the only instances where I went against their hopes and dreams for me. It was tough to choose to go to Findlay because it was a small division two school.

In Susan Walton’s “The Obedient Unlived Life,” a point is brought up concerning whether or not living an obedient life is getting you anywhere. Walton believes that if you are constantly on the line of obedience you are missing out on certain aspects of life. I for one, disagree on this. I missed out on certain aspects of my high school years, yet they weren’t huge events that would have changed the way I am today. Now that I am a college student, the things I missed out on in high school don’t seem that bad after all. Not going to a good close friend of mines mid year party did not effect me in any way. Life has gone on, and I really don’t think about missing it.

Walton also argues that the most common reason for living an obedient life is fear. The fact that something unfortunate could happen to you if you don’t do what is expected. This is true in my case, going back to the fact that I feared what the community would think if I didn’t do what they wanted, and what was right.

Walton seems to think that “The moral of the story is that you should stop to think whether being good is getting you anywhere you want to go?” (Walton 405). I stopped to think about this statement and then came to the conclusion that being good did get me to where I wanted to be. I survived the temptations of high school, and now I am a college student, with a future ahead of me. I would like to think that this is contributed to by the fact that I followed the rules and did what was right.

I believe that everyone takes their own paths occasionally. I do not however agree with Walton on her point made about people missing out on life if they are constantly following instructions. Instructions and rules are not set in order to hinder ones life, but take out the confusion and give it structure. My four years of high school were amazing even though I did follow the rules.

Living in a small community did have its disadvantages, but I turned out to be a acceptable kid in the end because of it. Hometown values, and trustworthiness is what I learned growing up. Even though, I never really became the individual who stood out against every group idea there was, I became the loved one in my hometown, and will be for a long time to come. Thanks to choosing to conform to the norm and living my life the way other people expected. Other people might complain, but me, I’m quite happy! Living your life the right way, the obedient way makes you a better person in the end.

Good morning to the principal, teachers and friends. As you are all aware, our school has organized a cleanliness campaign. Today, I would like to talk about the campaign. The duration of the campaign is one month, from 1 to 30 April 2013. There are a number of things you can do to keep your class and surroundings clean. Have a schedule for all cleaning activities. Assign duties for everyone in the class. Go the extra mile to keep your school clean. Pick up rubbish lying on the ground whether you are on the field, eating at the cafeteria or climbing up the stairs. If everyone does this on a regular basis, then the whole school will always be litter-free. Clear rubbish bins when they are full. Do not wait until there are telltale signs like overflowing bins and a stale odor. Moreover, wipe window panes, fans and other areas where dust can accumulate.

At the same time, use the rubbish bins that are provided and do not litter. Besides that, do not vandalize walls and school property. Most importantly, have a positive attitude and do not be lazy.

Your school can be a sanctuary or a place of stress depending on how you clean and maintain it. If you keep doing these things on a regular basis, they will eventually become second nature to you.

10 Things to Remember When Your Whole Day (or Month) Seems to Go Wrong

Some days everything seems to just go wrong.

And sometimes it is not just days we’re talking about. But a week or months when things feel tough and rough and you just want go home and give up.

I’ve had many such days and periods but over the years I have also become a lot better at handling them. So they don’t drag me down and become a whole lot worse than they are already are.

Today I would like to share 10 things to remember when your whole day, week or month(s) seems to go wrong. All of them have been very valuable to me.

1. There is a brand new day tomorrow.

Just because this day or the last week didn’t go well doesn’t mean that there is not a brand new day tomorrow.

A day when you can start anew. With taking action to move towards what you want, likely having a bit more luck and when it will be easier to see that this difficult time is only temporary and not permanent (even if it might feel that way right now).

2. People don’t care that much about what I do.

When things go wrong then you may not only be troubled by that situation itself. But also by what the people around you may think or say about what happened.

Don’t worry too much about that though. Because even though you may be the main character in your own life you are not it in everybody else’s lives.

They have their kids, pets, jobs and own challenges that they are fully focused on.

3. What is going well in my life though?

It is very easy to get stuck in focusing on the negative things and so they drag you further and further down into self-criticism and negativity.

But don’t forget that there are still things that are going well in your life. It may be small things. Or things you often take for granted like a roof over your head, clean water or three steady meals every day.

I find that zooming out in this way helps me a lot to snap out of destructive thought patterns and to feel more level-headed again.

4. Criticism or destructive attacks may not be about me at all.

Sometimes criticism is certainly valid and should be listened to if you want to improve in life.

But don’t make the common mistake of always thinking that the criticism or verbal attacks you receive are about you or something you did.

Because you do not know what is going on in the other person’s life right now. How he might be having a bad day or week himself. How she is miserable about her job, boss or marriage.

Sometimes you might simply be in the wrong place as this person needs to lash out to release the pent up inner pressure.

5. I can ask for help.

When things go wrong and you feel alone with the challenge then you feel even worse.

But you don’t have to. You can ask for help and may be surprised at how the people in your life will come to give a hand or some sound advice.

Or you can find a group of people online that are going through the same challenge as you – like for example reducing debt or getting into better shape – and get support when you are going through a tough patch.

Or you can go and talk to a counselor, therapist or doctor in your local area.

There is usually good help and support to be found. Even though it may not always feel like it before you ask.

6. Will this matter 5 months – or even 5 weeks – from now?

When you have setback, make mistake or fail then it might feel like the sky is falling.

I have found the question above to be really helpful in these situations to not fall into the trap of feeling like a powerless victim.

It helps me to relax, to zoom out and to see this setback in a larger perspective and to see that even though it is a big thing right now it will most likely now have that much of a negative impact in the long run.

7. I have handled tough situations in the past.

When you are standing in the middle of things going wrong then it is easy to get a bit panicky. To lose faith in yourself and your abilities.

Then look to the past for a bit of strength and confidence in what you can do.

Doing this helps me to feel like I am standing on firmer ground again. And sometimes I can even find a solution I used for another challenge in the past that I can reuse or readjust to get me out of this situation too.

8. Setbacks can be very valuable if I let them.

A common way of looking at failures, mistakes and obstacles on your journey is as something negative and things that should be avoided.

But trying to actively avoid them at any price usually leads to analysis paralysis and a lack of taking any significant action at all.

And the setbacks and mistakes in life can actually be very helpful if you let them. Before you start moving on from one of them ask yourself:

What is one thing I can learn from this situation?

That question has helped me to improve a lot about how I do things in life and to avoid repeating making the same mistakes over and over again.

9. Focus more on the small how-tos and less on the whys.

Processing what happened is certainly important. But instead of taking the common route of dwelling on the whys of the negative situation 80% or the time and looking for solutions 20% of the time switch those numbers around.

Spend more of your time on finding the small and practical steps you can take to make things better.

By doing so you’ll start to feel more confident and less suffocated and paralyzed as you are moving forward once again (even if it is just by taking one very small step at first).

10. It is always darkest before the dawn.

This thought helped me to hold on when things looked bleak for many months and to keep going when my social skills and dating life was just plain bad.

It helped me to keep going when things looked like they would never pick up for my own small online business.

Why? Because I have found it to be true.

When things seemed to be at the lowest point something always happened. Often because being at that low point forced me to change something in how I did things.

But maybe also because life seems to have some kind of balance if I just keep going. If I keep taking action instead of giving up and doing nothing then something good always happens.

Seeing this repeat itself year after year strengthened my belief in taking action and to keep going even on rough days or weeks.

And it brings some comfort even when things look pretty dark.

If there was one thing that I could redo again, it would be my first two years of high school. I did not take my first two years of high school very seriously and I received a number of bad grades. One seemingly trite event managed to create a paradigm shift that has affected my academic life ever since. I was doing some SAT preparation in the summer after 10th grade, and I received a decent but mediocre score on my diagnostic test. Not feeling too good about this score, I decided to do more work on this subject because I didn't have much else to do.

I spent the following week spending much of my time learning from a few test-preparation booklets in order to maximize my score and within a week I increased by score by almost 200 points. This was the beginning of a paradigm shift that changed my way of thinking about school and working in general. Before then, I would not care much about school, and my everyday schedule was not very effective if I wanted good grades. I did not put my schooling in a high priority. After that, I became more interested in school and I worked harder and used my time wisely to reach my full potential.

This small event will greatly affect my college experience and my contribution to the UF community. Before this, I do not think I would have had the qualifications to be part of the UF community, and even if I were admitted, I do not think I would have done very well in college. Now that I know how to plan my time wisely, and work hard, my college experience would be greatly improved because I will have the right attitude to excel in my classes. Because I have revised the way in which I spend my time, I will also contribute to the UF campus community by joining and being actively involved in several UF student organizations.

The past year has been a good reflection of change that has occurred since that event in the study room where I calculated my second SAT practice test. I have gotten straight A's, passed three AP exams with 5s and an AP exam with a 4, became a National Merit semifinalist, and joined the church youth worship band. If I keep things up at this pace, my college experience will bring a number of accomplishments and I will also contribute to the UF community.

Hello dears! This will be my last tip for the week because I will be out of town! Anyways, as I was shopping for my school supplies today, I realized how many people don't know how to organize everything for school. And that can slow you down in your studies!

So these are quick tips on getting organized for school! ♥


O1. LOCKER ♥
+ Most of your stuff will be here, so it is important to keep it super organized!
+ The first thing to do is maximize your space by adding locker shelves into your locker.
+ Add hooks. mirrors, and pencil holders if they are not already in place.
+ You can either keep all your subjects together, or keep type of item together
+ If you keep your subjects together, you may want to organize them by what time of day you have them. For example, keep your first three periods on the top shelf and the last four on the bottom shelf.
+ Have an extra folder in your locker to throw extra papers in so there aren't tons of paper laying around.
+ Have a small trash bin for random trash.
+ Keep all your pens, pencils, and highlighters in your pencil container. Then take out the ones you need for the next class.
+ Clean out every few weeks to prevent it from getting really messy.


O2. HOMEWORK SPACE ♥
+ The area you do your homework needs to be really neat and tidy so you can get it over with and have everything you need for it all in one place.
+ Keep a calendar or planner to write down when each assignment is due.
+ Have a pen holder with several pens, pencils, and highlighters to use when at home.
+ Have extra paper to do your homework on.


O3. BACKPACK // PURSE ♥
+ The bag you use at school needs to be very neat as well so you can find things when you need them.
+ Firstly, make sure your bag is big enough. It's hard to be organized when you don't have enough space.
+ Keep your books near the back and smaller things up front.
+ Use cosmetic bags to keep your feminine products, lip gloss, bobby pins, ect in one place.
+ Use a pencil pouch to carry a few extras around.


O4. BiNDERS // NOTEBOOKS ♥
+ It is best to have one for each subject so you can keep everything seperate. But you can also get a big binder or notebook and use a divider system.
+ If you have a binder for each subject, you may want to use dividers for things like. homework, graded papers, tests, projects, etc.
+ Use a color code system for each subject. For example, for History, have a purple binder or divider, highlighter, and notebook.

A. Some people might think working round the house is an easy thing, but these people obviously don’t do very much of it. When you have to tidy up a living room full of kids’ toys, clean bookshelves covered in dust and prepare a meal for suppertime, it can be exhausting. You can’t do it alone, so you’ve got to employ your family to help. Still, they don’t always do their jobs!

E. For many adults, the first thing to do every morning is to grab a cup of coffee and sit down with the news. F. Whereas some people don’t mind doing housework, for others, it’s a real bother. The job of a butler

The job of a 21st century butler was underappreciated in society, but in carrying out the role Mr Wainwright found a type of magnificence which contradicted that lack of respect. His ability to be a silent yet highly perceptive presence amongst the upper classes, whilst performing his duties immaculately, was his proof.

He understood why he might be looked down upon by others; servitude wasn’t equated with prestige, unlike other jobs such as surgeon or architect. And society’s general disdain for the very privileged meant those who served them were like slaves to the enemy. He could leave his job at any time, however, and his salary rivalled his prestigious counterparts in the outside world’.

What he wasn’t allowed to do was be less than perfect. A butler was the boss of all the other service staff and he hadn’t arrived at the position overnight. The others around him – the valet, the footman, the hall boy – could make small mistakes and seemingly get away with it, that is until the earl took notice and had a word with Mr Wainwright, which he would pass on to them. The admonishment was more like a slap on the wrist, thanks to his kindly nature, however.

The butler had to know what was going to happen before it happened. Anticipation was the top job skill – not something you’re taught at school. It was a life lesson, one most people rarely learn. Even at butler training, this skill would be one you would just have to ‘pick up’. They’d tell you that you need to do this, but it was up to the individual to work out how they’d achieve it. Sacrificing your own needs to attend to the needs of others was a large part of it.

Besides being well paid for his service, there were certain other rewards for being a butler. The workspace was an elegant turn-of-the-century mansion, which Mr Wainwright admired deeply but had grown so accustomed to he took for granted, aside from its upkeep. The endless array of dignitaries that passed through the halls meant experiencing – if only from the sidelines – a slice of society most people would never come across. The butler’s living quarters were well furnished, if meagre in space. But the butler – in fact, all the staff – dined much like the nobility. They partook of the same fine meals that went upstairs, even if they consumed them downstairs. That was what Mr Wainwright savoured the most.

Every bit as delicate as the household procedures was Mr Wainwright’s relationship with the earl. Their exchanges were often friendly, but it was understood that they were not ‘friends’, nor could Mr Wainwright ever wish for that. The lady of the house was technically the person he reported to. Lady Channing was the one who’d elevated him to his exalted position, and who would defend him against any of the earl’s misgivings about his service, of which there were few.

Mr Wainwright had settled on a life of service, disregarding other opportunities, not only because of his rare ability to serve others while remaining largely unseen, but also because of his deep-seated need to be needed himself. Praise, however, was rare in Channing Manor – the perfunctory ‘Thank you, Wainwright’ was as commonplace as afternoon tea. The very promotion from footman to butler had only included the words ‘I’d like you to be our butler’ followed by ‘This is what you will do’. It was years later, when Lady Channing, in a moment of humility, said, ‘I don’t know what I would do without you,’ that Mr Wainwright was reminded of his wise choice.
