The Censorship of Music

The Censorship of Music:
It’s our Right
In 1967, The Doors agreed to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show; executive producers asked that the word “higher” be removed and replaced with “better” from their hit song, “Light my Fire”. The exact lyrics are “You know that it would be untrue. You know that I would be a liar ,If I was to say to you ,Girl, we couldn't get much higher, Come on baby, light my fire, Come on baby, light my fire, Try to set the night on fire”. This is a key example of censorship at work. Some say that music has been censored since the 1900’s. Some other prominent musicians that have been censored are Dixie Chicks, Madonna and Eminem (Free Muse). The people that are trying to censor music are religious extremists, presidential candidates and, government officials. These groups say that certain music contains anti-Christians themes, profanity, sex and violence. They censor the music by restricting or eliminating radio play, boycotts and protests (Dority). I believe that censorship of music in the United States is wrong. It is wrong because it is a violation of our freedom of speech; it limits the amount of artistic expression an artist can have and gets in the way of breaking down barriers which might not be touched any other way.
When you think of artistic expression, music probably is not the first thing that comes to mind. Most people think of painters or poets, but music is no exception. To censor music is in fact attempting to eliminate our artistic expression. In fact, musicians sometimes even censor their own work to avoid being singled out or rejected by groups (Dority). This reason alone is reason enough to stop the censoring of music. As Victor Lombardi’s states in his thesis paper titled, “Music and Censorship”, “Once an artist, an individual produces art, something that may be thought of as a commodity. A censor who seeks to limit the distribution of this commodity not only harms the artist economically, but also professionally.

Any journalist who completes college in journalism is taught the Journalists Code of Ethics. Journalists are taught these ethics to insure that all journalists will act in a professional and ethical manner. Yet the media violates these codes when they censor music for any reason other than profanity. The first of these codes states: they are taught to support the open exchange of views, even views they find repugnant (Society). This is perhaps the most important code that journalists are to follow. They are in direct violation of this code when they cave into pressure from the government and religious groups to censor music. The second of these codes states: they are to examine their own cultural values and avoid imposing those values on others (Society). Whether it is changing the lyrics to a song or the total banning of a song, unless the song being censored contains profanity, they have an ethical duty not to let their values influence what music they play. The third and final code that applies to this issue states: they are to expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media (Society). This code is violated because the journalists who work at these stations, that censor music, go along with what they are told. These journalists have an ethical responsibility to expose any unethical practices their station may have. To further understand how censorship applies to unethical practices of the media we need to first understand the true definition of the word censor.

The word censor has a very specific meaning. If you look in a dictionary the word censor means: to examine for fitness and often delete parts deemed unsuitable (Morehead, 118). In the United States we often think of censorship as the total banning of something. Similar to how the Nazi’s used to burn books in Germany. Censorship in the United States is for the most part exactly how its true definition is stated. The media has determined what music is suitable and what is unsuitable and they have deleted parts they disagree with. Many people feel that if the media is allowed to censor music then it must be okay because our First Amendment rights protect our freedom of speech.

After the United States won the Revolutionary War our founding fathers wr

The Ethics of the Media

The essays are ideal for those taking examinations in English Literature.

The Ethics of the Media

The purpose of the media has become an ongoing question since the large amount of conflicts between the consumer and media. Why is the original purpose of the media so damn hard to figure out? It is time to confront this issue instead of blowing it off by saying, "We can never change the media, so why bother?" What kind of chickenshit statement is that. If there are so many people with so much power, surely one of them realizes the downward spiral of the ethics of the media. I feel my sole purpose of this paper is to tell everyone my ideas and viewpoints on censoring the media.

Ooooooo, censor. What a bad word that is when used in the same sentence with media. So many people believe censorship is a bad thing, but there is no other solution in stopping the "bad press." When I sit back and look at the stories about stories that are bad and offending to someone, I realize something needs to be done. The media is out of control. True, there are many informing and needed stories, but, my god, how many times a day to we need to hear and read about how much money O. J. Simpson has to pay the family of Ronald Goldman? We, as consumers, need to sit back and ask ourselves, "What was the point of hearing or reading that story?" Back to the censor issue. I, as an aspiring journalist, do not believe in total and complete censorship of the media, but also, as an aspiring journalist, I am embarrassed of some of the stories that are run, for instance, when the crime scene photos of Jon-Benet Ramsey were run in Globe magazine. Was there not anyone, an editor, a writer, or even a custodian at Globe who thought, "Uh, oh. These photos may get us into some trouble." Was there not a single sole who had enough ethics to try and stop these pictures from being printed? This is where censorship comes in. If I could do anything in the world, I would first, stop world hunger, and second set up some guidelines and laws that the media must obey.

Guidelines such as, no digging through peoples trash and no peeking in windows. Of course, we know that by law, there is to be no peeking in windows, or over fences, but there is no one at the editors desk to implicate these laws. There is supposed to be someone there to prevent these stories from running, but remember, their paycheck depends on how many copies are sold or how high the ratings are. This "censor person" needs to have a set wage. If there was someone to stop these types of occurrences, half of my problems with the media would be taken care of. This may sound like a lame solution, but we need to start somewhere.

Obviously this is not a complete solution to these problems with the media, so the next step would be to start using the editors for weeding out the stories that are not giving some type of information that the consumer wants and needs to hear or read. This is also easier said than done. This solution also brings up questions like, how does the editor know what stories the consumer wants to hear or read about? That is the responsibility of the media. Let them take polls and give every effort to find out what we want. Journalism will only survive if it establishes a more valuable and clearly defined mission, (Morality of Mass Media, Ellen Hume.)

I could write a book about all the things I want to see changed in the media before I become a part of it, but I will not. There should be a line drawn so that the media can be punished for their wrongdoing. Many people agree that there should be a line drawn and like it or not, that line is called censorship. Our founding fathers did not want censorship on the media, but they probably did not think that the media would be doing such a crummy job. I do not want to say that all media is doing a bad job. Overall, they are doing a fairly good job, but there is still a large amount of dirty press that needs to be cleaned up.

Censorship of Music in the Media
The American society of today has buried its head in the sand. If our venerable representatives in Washington, D.C. and our respective state capitols feel the need to regulate which musical albums and concerts I should be exposed to, then I guess that means I will have to find someone to vote for who doesn't feel that way; because those Lexus' and those mansions are harder to come by without taxpayers' money for a salary. In fact, repeated attempts to censor my music selection, not to mention my movies and my books, might result in my own name appearing on the ballot someday.

Censorship In Music

Censorship in music is a topic that has
brought about much controversy in the past two decades. There have been
many different arguments on the topic, however the question still remains
as if it should be censored or it should not be censored.

Before you can form an opinion on this,
you must hear both sides of the argument on this much-debated topic. Some
people believe that music should be censored so all audiences can hear
it without it containing any controversial lyrics. Others believe it should
not be censored and musical artists should be able to speak, sing, rap,
or rhyme freely without anyone censoring them.

"Whether a person finds a work obscene
depends largely on his or her moral or religious beliefs. These views change
with each generation and further complicate the censorship dilemma." (Censorship
by, Bradley Steffens page 97)

The quote above is very true. Religious
or moral beliefs have a great influence on how a person feels about censorship,
and as generations pass on the common beliefs on it may change. Right now,

America is more uncensored than ever. However, things were very different
a few generations ago.

Some people believe music should be censored.

They believe some of the language musical artists use is vulgar, obscene,
and crude. Also the fact that music is played on medias such as radio and
television, which are free to listen to by all audiences, and there are
many parents that would not wish for their kids to hear foul language.

So on radio and televison any controversial language is either silenced,
edited out by a soft sound, or some artists make two versions of their
songs; one that is made for the artist's album, which is uncensored; and
one for televsion and radio with any controversial words change to be acceptable
for all audiences. This does not include cable television, which can be
audited by parents since the parents must order and pay for the channel
to be viewed.

"Preventing or punishing speech. is a clear
violation of the First Amendment."
(Censorship. Opposing Viewpoints by, Greehaven

Press page 147). This quote here is the "battle cry" of many anti-censorship
groups. When you really think about it, it is a violation of the First

Amendment, which says: "Congress shall make no law. abridging the freedom
of speech or of the press". The First Amendment guarantees the right to
freedom of speech, and censorship is violating peoples' rights to say whatever
they want to say. It is sometimes difficult to understand when a child
gets punished for using foul language meanwhile the child's parents have
the right to critiscize and petition the government whenever they feel
the need to do so. Many musical artists feel that when they are forced
to change lyrics their rights are being violated. In some artists' songs
they like to express their feelings towards somebody or something, and
it hurts them to be censored because the new words implemented are not
from his or her heart. They feel that they are being held down.

Due to the amendment made by our founding
fathers I do not believe there will ever be an answer to the question whether
or not music should be censored. The way I see it, it should not be censored.

Censorship in Music

Censorship in music is a topic that has brought much controversy in the past two decades.
There have been many different arguments on the topic, however the question still remains
as if music should be censored or not. I think that music should not be censored for one
solid reason: artist must reveal and express their feeling however they see it fit, thats
why we call them artists.

Before we can form an opinion on this much-debated topic, we must hear both sides of the
argument. Some people believe that music should be censored so all audiences can listen to
it without it containing any controversial lyrics. Others believe it should not be
censored and musical artists should be able to speak, sing, rap, or rhyme freely without
anyone censoring them.

"Whether a person finds a work obscene depends largely on his or her moral or religious
beliefs. These views change with each generation and further complicate the censorship
dilemma." (Censorship by, Bradley Steffens page 97)

The quote above is very true. Religious or moral beliefs have a great influence on how a
person feels about censorship. As generations pass on, the common beliefs may change.

Right now, America is more uncensored than ever. However, things were very different a few
generations ago. The freedom of speech was limited, and parents couldnt make money off of
record companies by suing them.

If people believe that some of the language musical artists use is vulgar, obscene, and
crude, they should not listen to it. Music that is played on media such as radio and
television-which is free to listen to by all audiences- is either silenced, or edited.
Some artists even make two versions of one song: censored and uncensored. I think parents
that would not wish for their kids to hear foul language should be happy about that fact.
This does not include cable television, which can be audited by parents, since the parents
must order and pay for the channel to be viewed.

"Preventing or punishing speechis a clear violation of the First Amendment."
(Censorship. Opposing viewpoints by, Greehaven Press page 147). This quote here is the
"battle cry" of many anti-censorship groups. When you really think about it, it is a
violation of the First Amendment, which says: "Congress shall make no law abridging the
freedom of speech or of the press". The First Amendment guarantees the right to freedom of
speech, and censorship is violating peoples' rights to say whatever they want. It is
sometimes difficult to understand when a child gets punished for using foul language,
meanwhile the child's parents have the right to criticize and petition the government

whenever they feel the need to do so. Many musical artists feel that when they are forced
to change lyrics, their rights are being violated. In some artists' songs they like to
express their feelings towards somebody or something, and it hurts them to be censored
because, the new words implemented are not from his or her heart. They feel that they are
being held down.

Many children often hear explicit language from older siblings or parents at an early age.
They believe that since someone they look up to uses those words, they should too.
Eventually, everyone will be exposed to language they do not find acceptable. Now I would
fight about that. The key element in childrens life is their parent, who must, from an
early age of the child teach him/her whats right and whats wrong. It is not the artists
fault that kids hear foul language, and repeat it elsewhere. It is the parents fault. 98
percent of all parents that complain about foul language in the music, are the once that
dont spend enough time with their children; therefore dont influence them as much as
needed. Schools and babysitters are not the solution, but if thats the only choice, well
parents should have thought about it before having kids.

Essay on Music of Censorship

Music of Censorship
  1. Music Censorship All types of music need some kind of censorship. Censorship makes a person realize that music is good for the heart. Censorship totally makes people.
  2. Music Censorship of the controversial music will not resolve any problems and it will only create more problems. The current state of society would not allow music censorship to be.
  3. Music Censorship to musical works is banned. This censorship may come from a series of motivations such as moral, political, religious, or obscenity reasons. Music censorship first.

Have you ever wondered why people censor music Artists? It seems that music is getting more censored than it should. They censor music because it has bad words, but it’s not right to do it because it messes up their lyrics.

Censorship means that the government censor words on TV and music are not for children. On the internet it says that it is sometimes bad to censor and sometimes good. Artists are getting madder and madder everyday. They are blocking the Artists art and people who are listening to this music are fighting to get this music uncensored.

Censorship is bad because it talks away right of speech in the first amendment. So if they are doing censorship it should be illegal because of the right of speech. They always censor music it probably makes you as mad as it mad. I read an article in the internet about why they censor music-because the children who listen to it, try to do what the lyrics say. That’s not true most teens do the opposite.

The third reason censorship is wrong is the government should censor the music and let parents choose what they want the children to watch and what they want not to watch. If the parents don’t want the child to watch the music, it should be banned to the child and no music has to be censored. This is a better way not problems will occur and everybody will be all right. ‘As such there are no laws concerning the censorship of music. Songs which have strong language or racist or harmful references will have this sign on them:

This simply means that anyone can buy the song but they should be aware of what the song contains. There have been many songs that have been banned by radio stations and TV stations across the world.’

In conclusion they should not censor music. They are censoring the Artists art. It is in the 1st admendment and they should let the parents choose.
